Homemade Hostess Cupcakes


Do these look familiar to you? Like, maybe a beloved chocolate cupcake that lives in the snack aisle of the grocery store?

When I was a kid, the snack aisle of the grocery store was my favorite! I mean, what’s not to like? Boxes on top of boxes of Twinkies, Swiss Roll Cakes, mini muffins, and mini donuts, the list is endless! Let’s be real here, the snack aisle is still my favorite aisle.

I decided to try my own little spin on the Hostess cupcakes and make it at home! This was honestly so much fun! It’s exciting to make something that you’ve really only seen at the store, but you get to make it your own and change it up a bit!

I believe that the store-bought cupcakes feature a cream frosting stuffed in the center, however, I decided to fill mine with marshmallow, for two reasons. One, I wanted to put my own spin on these cupcakes and I figured this was a good opportunity to change it up a bit! Second, marshmallow makes everything better, especially when it’s stuffed inside a chocolate cupcake. When I was younger, my mom used to buy me these chocolate-covered marshmallow cookies, so this was my way of combining two of my childhood favorites into one sweet little cupcake liner.

My chocolate glaze that I used to coat these chocolate cupcakes is probably one of my favorite glazes ever! I used a white chocolate version of this glaze and now I get to show off my chocolate version! This glaze drizzles so smoothly over every surface and just lightly lays over the cakes! It’s absolutely mouthwatering watching this glaze do its thing. This glaze will set up slightly, which provides a beautiful canvas to swirl those signature white swoops onto!

Let’s get to it!



1 cup of flour

1 cup of sugar

6 tablespoons of cocoa powder

1 teaspoon of baking powder

3/4 teaspoon of baking soda

1/4 teaspoon of salt

1/4 cup of flavorless oil

1 egg

1 splash of vanilla

1/2 cup of milk

1 splash of vinegar (probably about 1 teaspoon)

1/2 cup of hot water

Chocolate Glaze:

1 and a half cups of chocolate chips

4 cups of powdered sugar

1/3 cup of hot water

1/4 cup of light corn syrup

a sprinkle of salt

1/4 teaspoon of clear vanilla, (if you don’t have any, feel free to leave it out!)


Store-bought frosting or Marshmallow frosting!

1 cup of melted white chocolate

First, start by making the cupcakes. Combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt, oil, and egg into a bowl and whisk to combine. In a measuring cup, add the milk and a splash of vinegar. Let that sit for about a couple of seconds and then pour into the batter, with the vanilla. Stir until almost combined! Add in the hot water. As you stir the hot water in, be careful not to stir too quickly so you don’t splash any hot water! After the mixture is fully combined, scoop into lined cupcake trays. Bake at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean!

After the cupcakes are fully cooled, it’s time to start decorating! For the filling, you want something that’s going to be super creamy and delicious! I used my favorite marshmallow recipe, that you can find on my blog, because I love the combination of marshmallow and cupcakes! But, you can use cream cheese frosting, buttercream frosting, whatever you’re favorite kind of filling is! To replicate the store-bought cupcakes we all know and love, the inside should be a white frosting, but you can customize however you like best!

I used the back of a large circle piping tip to scoop out a section of the cupcake. Then I took my marshmallow filling in a piping bag, and filled the cupcake until the marshmallow just popped out of the top!

Now, it’s time to glaze! Melt the chocolate in a microwave, in 30-second intervals. In a bowl, combine the powdered sugar, water, corn syrup, salt, and vanilla. Stir to combine, and then begin to add in the chocolate. You want the glaze to be thick, but still be able to pour onto the cupcakes. You can add more water if you need to thin out the glaze any, but 1/3 of a cup should do the trick!

Take about the 1/4 cup measure and scoop some of the glaze to pour onto the cupcakes. I poured the glaze right into the middle of the cupcake and used a mini offset spatula to smooth out to the edges of the cupcake. I tried to get it just to the edges of the cupcake liner.

While the glaze is setting up, melt the white chocolate for the decoration on top! I used the microwave to melt the white chocolate, but you could use a double boiler if you prefer! After the chocolate was melted, I poured the chocolate into a piping bag and snipped off a really small opening! I wanted the swirls to be as thin as I could make them! Then I just made little loops in a line across the top!

You want to fill the cupcakes util the frosting just pops out the top!
I took a 1/4 cup of the glaze and just poured it over the top! Then I used the back of a spoon to help the glaze smooth over the top of the cake.
I love how pretty the white chocolate looks against the sweet milk chocolate glaze!
Trust me when I say, they taste better than they look!

Aren’t these the cutest things ever! I could look at them all day! I love when you bite into a cupcake and the filling just pops out! I can’t imagine a better surprise than delicious marshmallow filling stuffed into a rich chocolate cupcake…
