Chewy, brown sugar cookies with a dollop of Nutella right in the center make these Nutella Drop Cookies a total win! These cookies come together in less than thirty minutes from start to finish and are a complete crowd pleaser!
Baking Soda Versus Baking Powder
Baking soda and baking powder seem so similar, they practically share a name, right?! But there’s actually some pretty big differences in the two!
Baking soda is used to help create chewy cookies with perfect crispy edges, while baking powder helps create light and airy cookies.
If I wanted a cookie to be more on the cake side, I would add baking powder over baking soda. Think of it as baking soda helps spread while baking powder helps rise.
Can you use them interchangeably?! Unfortunately no, they both do similar things, but they also work best in certain conditions,. Baking powder contains an acid of some sort, such as cream of tartar, and cornstarch, which gives it a different texture than the baking soda. Because baking soda does not contain an acid like baking powder, it’s best used when there is another acid present in the baked goods!
Understanding the ingredients you use helps create different cookies! It’s crazy to think of the difference you can create by just changing the amount of baking soda and/or baking powder!
It’s really the most delicious science!
Chocolate Hazelnut Deliciousness
Nutella is perfect in these Nutella Drop Cookies for obvious reasons! I love the nuttiness of the chocolate combined with the sweet brown sugar flavor.
If you can’t find Nutella at your local grocery store, you could use whatever chocolate-hazelnut spread you can find!
I think this recipe would also be delicious with any kind of nut butters! Adding a little dollop of peanut butter instead would be amazing!
The smooth creaminess with the chewy cookie so delicious!
There are two different ways to add Nutella to this recipe:
- You can add the dollop on top of the cookie dough and use a knife to swirl it into the cookie dough. This creates really pretty swirls on top of the cookies when they bake up!
- You can gently press down in the cookie dough to create an indent in the cookie dough, then add in the Nutella. This creates a pool of Nutella in the middle of the cookie when they bake up!
Both ways are super delicious and end up with amazing cookies!
Ingredient List:
- Flour
- Baking Powder
- Baking Soda
- Salt
- Butter
- Egg
- Sugar
- Brown Sugar - There’s quite a bit of brown sugar in this recipe but I love the rich molasses flavor with the vanilla and Nutella!
- Vanilla
- Chocolate Hazelnut Spread - I used Nutella for this recipe, but you can use whatever you find! You can also sub this with any of your favorite nut butters!
Tips and Tricks
This is a pretty simple recipe so I don’t have too many tricks for it! It’s one of my go-to cookie recipes!
One way to make this recipe come together quicker is to make sure your butter is room temperature. The harder the butter is, the longer it will take the ingredients to fully mix together!
I like to add about a teaspoon of Nutella onto the cookies, but that depends on the size of the cookies you make! Besides, I never really like to measure the amount of Nutella I use; you measure that with the heart!
These Nutella Drop Cookies might just be my new favorite cookies! I love how easy they come together. Not to mention, I’m never going to turn down Nutella!
Cheers!
