Homemade Sugar Scrub

To me, Sunday has always been the most controversial day of the week. While I know that Sundays are supposed to be a day of relaxation, they are also some of the days that I have the most anxiety.

My anxiety disorder really started when I was in high school. Go figure. Since my anxiety was centered around school, that meant that Sunday nights always signified the starting of a new school week, thus the start of more stress and anxiety. Even though I’m not in school anymore, I still get those “Sunday Jitters,” as I call them. In order to prevent that, I really fell in love with the idea of Self-Care Sundays, a concept I had seen many times on Pinterest or Instagram. The idea is to use Sunday to treat yourself in the best way possible. It’s a time to remind ourselves to stop rushing around, trying to get everything done and take care of our needs. It can be different for everyone; for me, it’s spending the day at home, relaxing, taking care of myself with a spa day.

Today, my spa of choice was doing my nails and finishing them off with a sugar scrub. A homemade sugar scrub to be exact. If you’ve never made one before, you are missing out! They are so easy to make, and you get to customize them however you want! They are basically just oil, sugar, and essential oils. For this specific recipe, I used coconut oil, because I always have it in the house, and I think it has a neutral scent. I didn’t want an oil that was going to give off another smell besides my essential oils. I tried olive oil once when I was desperate, and I wouldn’t recommend it.

The best thing about this sugar scrub is how wonderfully smooth your hands feel afterward! I work at a daycare, so during flu season, I wash my hands a bajillion times a day. I honestly wish that was an exaggeration. With all the harsh washings my hands take, they absorb this sugar scrub immediately. The rough sugar exfoliates, while the coconut oil absorbs into my skin, leaving my hands better than before the flu season hits!

The essential oils that I used were lavender and lemon! This was such a bright, soothing combination, I feel instantly relaxed just smelling it! The essential oils that you use are completely up to you! You could change them up based on the season, or if you were going to gift them, you could change it up to reflect the person receiving them!

Ingredients:

Half a cup of coconut oil

2 cups of sugar

10 drops of Lavender essential oil

7 drops of Lemon essential oil

Melt the oil first. I just put mine in the microwave for thirty-second increments until it was fully melted. Then, I added my essential oils. When the oils hit the warm coconut oil, their smell just blossoms around you! It is seriously heaven. Then, add in the sugar. Mix until fully combined! I start with dry hands and rub the sugar scrub all over. Afterward, wash off the mixture from your hands, and go about your day with perfectly smooth hands!
