I love making this easy chickpea tuna salad recipe, especially during a busy work week! It’s filling and easy to make which makes it perfect for quick lunch on the go! Not to mention, it’s easy recipe to customize! Add in whatever ingredients you have on hand or you even leave out the tuna altogether and make a delicious vegan chickpea tuna salad, just without the tuna!
I always try to keep cans of chickpeas in the pantry, it’s perfect for hummus, soups, and salads! This recipe was inspired by a mock tuna salad recipe that I had which was made mainly out of chickpeas!
Tuna Salad
I think we all remember the traditional tuna salad our grandmas’ made, with half tuna and half mayo… That’s not really my jam anymore (was it ever?!). There’s a lot of different options when it comes to tuna salad recipes. Think of this as a base guide for your recipe! Just make it once, and then the next time you can sub in ingredients that you like best!

Serving Options
When it comes to serving this tuna salad, I like a nice piece of crunchy toast! However I have a few other options that are just as delicious!
Lettuce Wraps – Use a large leaf lettuce and fill them with the tuna salad! It adds a nice crunch to the tuna salad!
Pita Bread – Make a pita wrap and pile it high with the tuna salad! If you wanted to be even extra, you can add a smear of hummus to it!
Salad – Add a large scoop of tuna salad to a bed of lettuce, a few slices of red onion, and maybe a lemony dressing on top, and you have a delicious and hearty salad!
Tuna Salad Sandwich – Two slices of bread and you have a delicious sandwich ready for you! This might be my favorite way to enjoy this recipe!
Equipment Needed:
Large Bowl – Great for mixing everything together
Potato Masher – This is semi-optional, but I do think it’s easy for the mashed chickpeas! You can also use a fork if you want!

Step by Step Instructions:

Step 1. In a large bowl, mash chickpeas with a potato masher.

Step 2. Then add in drained tuna.

Step 3: Add in chopped scallions, dill relish, mayonnaise, greek yogurt, and dijon mustard.

Step 4. Stir everything together and enjoy!
Substitutions and Storage Options:
Dill Pickle Relish – I love the salty bits of relish, but you can also use briny capers, or just chop up some dill pickles!
Green Onions – I love the crunch and flavor these provide, but you can use red onion, or use some celery or red bell pepper for that extra crunch if the onion flavor is too strong for you!
If you want to spice up the recipe, here are some other things you can add to this recipe:
Fresh Lemon Juice – if you want to brighten up the tuna salad and cut down on some of the fishy flavor, add a good squeeze of lemon juice!
Fresh Herbs – Add some parsley, thyme, or dill to this recipe!
Nori Sheets – If you want a salty kick, crumble up some nori sheets to add to the tuna salad!
To Store: Store in an airtight container in the fridge for about 3-4 days!
