3 easy ways to transform store-bought frosting into a light, fluffy, decadent frosting! A store-bought shortcut that will take your cupcakes to the next level! All you need is a mixer and a few mix-ins and you're on your way to bakery-level frosting.
Step 1: Whip it real good
I couldn't resist that title! Sorry, not sorry!
My first step to enhancing your store-bought frosting is to whip it up for about 2-3 minutes. I like to add mine to a stand mixer, but any mixer will do! It doesn't take long before you will see the frosting begin to lighten up (especially if it's chocolate!) and practically double in size!
If you don't want to do anything else, I recommend doing this one step! Not only does it make your frosting so light and airy, but it also doubles the amount of frosting you have! Talk about a win-win!
Step 2: Add a mix-in
Okay, so you could stop with Step 1 and your frosting would be fantastic! But in the name of delicious cupcakes, we're not going to stop there!
For this mix-in, you can really add whatever you want! You could add Nutella, peanut butter, marshmallow spread, cookie butter, etc. I think about 2 tablespoons would be perfect!
If you were wanted to make your chocolate frosting, even more chocolatey, you can even add in a teaspoon of cocoa powder!
Add your mix-in to the frosting and stir it together after step 1! Be sure to fold in your mix in, so it doesn't deflate the air you've incorporated into your frosting.
Step 3: Garnish, garnish, garnish!
I love to garnish my cupcakes with something that is either a flavor inside the cupcake or a something to enhance the flavors. For example, if I was making a peanut butter cupcake, I could either add chopped peanuts to the top, or some flakey salt to bring out the sweet flavor out of the cupcakes!
It's an easy little addition that can make a big difference in your cupcake! Other garnishes could be sprinkles, salt, chopped nuts, chocolate shavings, chocolate sauce, caramel drizzle, fruit, etc.!
Let's put this store-bought frosting to the test!
So now that we have the three simple steps! Let's put it all together!
For this Chocolate Nutella cupcake, I bought a container of chocolate frosting from the store. Then I whipped the frosting on high speed for a minute or two. I added a large dollop of Nutella and stirred that in. After piping the frosting onto the cupcake, I garnished with a little flakey salt!
If you're ever in a pinch and need some delicious cupcakes, this is the easiest way to enhance a store-bought frosting! Not only will you get double the frosting, but the flavor will be richer and more delicious!
Cheers!
