Chocolate chip cookies are so last week, this Chocolate Chunk Cookie Recipe is the new and improved version of chocolate chip cookies. Using a whole chocolate bar chopped into delicious chunks that melt throughout a sweet and chewy cookie dough to create the ultimate late night dessert.
The BEST Chocolate Chunk Cookie Recipe
Chocolate chip cookies delicious and I definitely won’t argue that, but just wait until you try this Chocolate Chunk Cookie Recipe.
Chopping up the chocolate bar creates different size chunks of chocolate so they all get melty and delicious inside the cookie. The cookie dough is soft and chewy in the middle with a crunchy crust on the edges. With the melty chocolate throughout, all you need now is a nice glass of milk and your dessert is ready!
Chocolate Versus Chocolate Chips
Obviously, chocolate chips are a baking classic and always in my pantry. However, there are sometimes when I feel like using a chocolate bar can enhance the recipe. Even if you are using the exact same type of chocolate in the bar form instead, there’s a few key differences that make chocolate bars the better choice in cookies.
First, take a look at the chocolate chip. Do you see that cute little swirl at the top? In order to get the chocolate to look like that, they add stabilizers in the chocolate. Because of this, the chocolate chips can still retain their shape in the baking. While delicious, you end up missing out on those delicious pools of melty chocolate that you can get by using a bar chocolate.
The second difference comes when you chop up the chocolate. As you are chopping the chocolate, you end up with little tiny pieces and some big pieces, since you’re not a robot that cuts perfectly even pieces. When the cookies bake the smaller pieces of chocolate melt into the cookie dough, while the bigger pieces melt into little puddles of chocolate heaven.
All of this to say, that I still love and use chocolate chips all the time in baking! I prefer to use chocolate bars with cookies because I think it melts a little bit better. But don’t go throwing out your chocolate chips! They’re still equally delicious!
Types of Chocolate
If you haven’t noticed in the baking aisle, there are a *ton* of chocolate choices! Between milk chocolate, bittersweet chocolate, dark chocolate, white chocolate, and we haven’t even mentioned the different kinds of just dark chocolate!
Phew, that’s overwhelming just thinking about it!
Keep in mind, this is all up to personal taste here, so use my recipe as a guideline, but you can add whatever chocolate combination you think is most delicious!
I love using a mixture of bittersweet chocolate as well as dark chocolate. I like the balance of sweetness the dark chocolate adds to this cookie. If you think about the cookie dough itself, there’s already a ton of sugar in the cookie, not to mention the added sweetness from the vanilla! By adding the bittersweet and dark chocolate, it creates a nice depth of chocolate without making anything too sweet.
I like to use the 60-70% dark chocolate. I don’t like to go past 70% because I think it gets a little too bitter for me. But if you don’t like overly sweet desserts, dark chocolate would be the way to go!
If you feel like going really crazy, you could add white chocolate instead! White chocolate is probably my favorite type of chocolate so I’m always trying to create recipes using that!
