Browned Butter is an all-star of an ingredient! It adds warmth, nuttiness, and a beautiful depth of flavor to whatever you add it to! Not only is it super easy to make, but you can sub out brown butter in any recipe!
What is Browned Butter?
Browned Butter has to be one of my favorite ingredients! It has such a sweet caramel flavor that I think improves whatever dish you add it to!
It's essentially caramelized butter. As you melt the butter down, the milk solids in the butter begin to caramelize, turning them into a deep amber color.
How to Sub in Browned Butter
The most important step of substituting is to add 1-2 tablespoons more of butter than the recipe calls for. If the recipe calls for 1 stick of butter, add in an extra tablespoon. Since the butter is caramelizing, you can sometimes lose the amount of liquid that the recipe might need, so it's best to add a little bit more butter!
Once you have brown the butter, you can use it just like normal butter in the recipe. If the recipe calls for the butter to be cold from the fridge, I would just pour the brown butter into a glass dish and place in the fridge until it's solid. That could be about a few hours so keep that in mind when you're baking!
