If you need a daily dose of sweet and salty deliciousness, try out these Movie Theater Popcorn Cookies! They are the cookie form of getting a handful of warm popcorn and sweet candy all in one bite! Feel free to add whatever your favorite movie theater candy is! Plus, these cookies are cheaper than the cost of a small popcorn from the theaters!

I'm a huge fan of sweet and salty cookies, like these Potato Chip Cookies. These cookies are inspired by sitting in a dark theater when you get a bite of popcorn and a little bit of sweetness from the M&M's. I love the chocolate with the buttery popcorn that's perfectly salty and sweet!

Ingredients

  • Butter
  • Sugar
  • Brown Sugar
  • Egg
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Flour
  • Baking Powder
  • Mini Candy Coated Chocolates
  • Popcorn

See recipe below for all the details!

Step-By-Step Instructions

  1. Step 1: Combine butter, sugar, brown sugar and mix together. Then add in egg and vanilla.
  1. Step 2: Add flour and baking powder to the butter mixture.
  1. Step 3: Stir in popcorn and candies.
  1. Step 4: Scoop dough onto a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Bake for about 15 minutes.

Hint: I like to use the mini M&M's because you get a little bite of chocolate in every bite! But you could use whatever type of candy you like best!

Variations

Sweet and salty is the best combination, especially when it comes to cookies! Here are a few other ways to sweetened up these cookies!

  • Peanut Butter - can you ever have enough peanut butter!? Add in ½ cup of peanut butter with butter and you have a sweet and salty version made even better with peanut butter! Bonus points if you add peanut M&M's too!
  • Double Chocolate - add in chocolate chips for more chocolatey goodness!
  • Candy Crazy- add two or three different types of your favorite movie theater candy to really enhance the movie vibes!

Equipment

The most used piece of equipment in my kitchen is probably my cookie scoops! I use them for everything! From measuring out muffins, scooping cookie dough, and even using them to dollop frosting on cupcakes! It's perfect for making sure you get an even about of dough/batter every time!

Here is the three piece set similar to the ones I use! I love the three piece set because you have different sizes to choose from! I typically use the medium one for all my cookies!

Storage

If there's any leftovers (I totally get if you eat these all in one night), store them in an airtight container for about 3-4 days! These cookies don't last quite as long as other cookies because the popcorn can grow stale!

If you plan on baking the cookie dough another day, I would leave out the popcorn and add it to the top of the cookie dough before baking!

Top tip

I like to take some of the popcorn and crush it up in my hands before adding it to the cookie dough! Then you get a bunch of different pieces and textures in the cookies!

FAQ

Does the type of popcorn matter?

I tested this recipe a few different ways, using popcorn that I popped in a microwave and popcorn from a bag and it works out perfectly either way! If you use microwave popcorn, make sure it cools slightly before you add it to the cookie dough!

Can I use kettle corn?

Absolutely! Add whatever popcorn is your favorite!
